Community Assessment- Community health is a critical dimension in baccalaureate nursing.
This assignment allows you the opportunity to perform course objectives in “real life” by
assessing a community as client, arriving at a community diagnosis, proposing interventions, and
deciding how you would measure the outcomes. In this assignment, you will begin to evaluate
the health needs of a community. To meet the needs of the members of a community, public
health nurses must first identify barriers to health care and identify the priorities of the
community.
You will use the Nies & McEwen (2019) textbook Assessment Framework for a community
health assessment to explore a geographical community (Chapter 6). For help with writing the
questions to ask, see text Chapter 6, Box 6-2: Questions to Guide Community Observations
During a Windshield Survey. There are many different sources of data needed to complete a
comprehensive community assessment including the use of the NURS 400 LibGuide. Students
will explore these data sources to help the preparation of their community assessment. You will
explore these data sources to help with the preparation of your community assessment. The
Community Health Assessment PowerPoint (including all the grading criteria on the grading
rubric) is compiled, including multiple sources of data, following the completion of the
community assessment. Explain the value of collaborating with other professionals, the use of
data resources, and evidence-based practice to guide community health nursing. This is an
individual assignment. You may assess a city or county or neighborhood. Be aware that it is
sometimes difficult to find city or neighborhood health data, so it is fine to use county data in
this case. Please say in the assignment that you were not able to find city or neighborhood data,
so are using county data.
1. Start by selecting a community.
2. Next, complete a Walking or Windshield Survey of the community. View your chosen
community as your patient taking pictures (do not use stock photos from the internet)
and assessing what is healthy in the community and what is not or may lead to public
health concerns that could possibly be addressed in your nursing diagnosis. You must
include photos you took during your windshield/walking survey in your final
presentation.
3. Then, check the Week 8 module under course content and locate the NU400 resources in
the Mustang Library – NURS 400 LibGuide to do online searches for data about the
community. It might be helpful to check with your local Chambers of Commerce as a
great community resource!

a nurse (interprofessional collaboration) (examples may include mayor, teacher,
physician, environmental scientist, public health professional, minister, city council
member, health educator, etc.) Interview the key informant using open-ended
questions that you develop from the examples in the textbook.

This assignment is comprised of 2 parts, the first of which is due this week. Part II will be due in Week 7.
In Part I this week, choose a case from your state that involves civil rights or civil liberties that was decided by the United States Supreme Court. If your state does not have a case that was decided by the United States Supreme Court, choose a civil rights case from another state for which the United States Supreme Court issued a decision.
Here is a brief description of civil rights and civil liberties: Civil rights refers to equal social opportunities under the law. It gives you these freedoms such as the right to vote, the right to public education, or a fair trial, among other things, regardless of your wealth or race. Civil liberties mean freedom of religion, equal treatment and due process under the law, and the right to privacy.
You should be able to go online and look up your state and famous cases decided by the Supreme Court. For example,
Brown v Board of Education (1951) started in Topeka, Kansas, and ended up in the Supreme Court of the United States. Another example would be
Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley v Steve Sisolak, Governor of Nevada (2020) that started in Nevada and ended up the United States Supreme Court. A good source of information about cases decided by the United States Supreme Court is www.scotusblog.com. Other sources can be researched online using search terms for “civil rights cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.” Be sure to use a case
actually decided by the United States Supreme Court, and not a case decided by your state’s supreme court or a different court. A case that is still pending before the United States Supreme Court should
not be used. If you are unsure, please contact your Professor
BEFORE you pick your case and submit the assignment
as this is a significant part of your overall grade.
Research your court case and write an outline of the case that you will be using to prepare a presentation, which will either be a narrated PowerPoint, a Kaltura Video, or some other format as approved by your instructor.

Summary of the Case
In one or two paragraphs, provide a general overview of the case that serves as a snapshot of what the case is about and how it ended up in your state high court. Verdict and opinion (judgement): What were the concurring and dissenting opinions? How many judges decided for the defendant and how many justices decided against the defendant? What was the final verdict from the judge or the jury, if it was a jury trial?
Conclusion:
What was the resulting impact of the ruling? How did the citizens of your state benefit from it? Was this a good decision?

This case scenario is quite interesting since this is about a young female patient who reports multiple symptoms starting three weeks ago. This is where one researches and I believe this patient may be having an episode of major depressive disorder. I dare to come to come up with this diagnosis since she presents multiple symptoms starting about three weeks ago. Going over the multiple sections to cover this week in the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” I found that she presents with subjective information such as having insomnia, diminished ability to concentrate, lack of interest, weight loss due to loss of appetite, crying spells with no apparent reason. This young lady also reports feeling “tired & fatigued” and has lost interest in activities she usually enjoys. The key for me here was finding all these symptoms under the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder box (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: DSM-5-TR 2022). Although she does not meet all the criteria, she presents more than five symptoms with onset about three weeks ago and according to our manual symptoms must be present at least two weeks (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: DSM-5-TR 2022).
Regarding her headache, and according to our book this patient can be reporting somatic complaints such as pain and aches instead of reporting an actual feeling of sadness (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: DSM-5-TR 2022).
The classification of medication that I would recommend for this patient would be antidepressants. Our prescriber's book has a long list such as sertraline, paroxetine, trazodone, and escitalopram among many (Stahl, 2021). I would focus on a common drug that I see very often, and that is sertraline. Sertraline would be a good option for her since is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) (Stahl, 2021)
and I remember Dr. Kubiak mentioning that serotonin can be the usual one to blame for depression along with norepinephrine. This drug can boost the neurotransmitter serotonin and can also block the serotonin reuptake pump (Stahl, 2021)

What diagnosis do you believe may apply to this individual?
This patient presented with symptoms of headache, fatigue, sleep disturbance, weight loss, loss of interest in activities, and frequent crying spells, all of which are indicative of major depressive disorder (MDD). Signs that a patient might be suffering from MDD include avoiding certain situations that they enjoy, inability to concentrate, and being unable to go to work due to fatigue. MDD can disrupt the patient's daily life by affecting their home, work, and social life (Salvo et al., 2022). According to the DSM-5, to be diagnosed with MDD, patients must experience 5 or more symptoms in the last week.
What classifications of medications can be used to treat this disorder? Which medication do you recommend and why?
Treatment for this patient will include antidepressants. Antidepressants are classified into different types based on their work and chemical structures. There are four main groups: monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).
SSRIs are a broad category of antidepressant medications. Since this patient has no significant past medical or psychiatric history and takes no regular medications, my recommendation would be fluoxetine 10 mg for 4 weeks, then increasing the dose to 20 mg daily if the drug is well tolerated by the patient (Arcangelo et al., 2021). SSRIs tend to be well-tolerated and are relatively cost-effective. Patients who take SSRIs exhibit fewer side effects in comparison to those who take Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs). Therefore, SSRIs are often considered the first line and primary choice for the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. The class of SSRIs includes Fluoxetine (Prozac), Fluvoxamine (Luvox), Paroxetine (Paxil), Sertraline (Zoloft), Citalopram (Celexa), and Escitalopram (Lexapro). Side effects include weight gain, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal issues, and agitation (Arcangelo & Peterson, 2021).
